Doctors, Hospitals and Health

Though the medical facilities are still limited and in many cases not up to international standards, there has been much improvement in recent years, offering a greater range and quality of services. There are several foreign doctors and international clinics in town, most listed below. Calmette Hospital and the international clinics can handle most medical problems but serious illness or injury may still require medical evacuation, probably to Bangkok or Singapore. In addition to general medical services, the international clinics also offer evacuation and medical translation services. Though the cost of medical care is fairly nominal in Cambodia, the cost of medical evacuation is exorbitant. Medical insurance including evacuation insurance is highly advisable. See "Insurance Companies" on page 48.

In case of medical emergency, proceed to the main hospital (Calmette Hospital) or one of the major international clinics such as International SOS. Be aware that the ambulance services are not always prompt and the emergency telephone numbers sometimes go unanswered. Also be aware that only a couple of the foreign clinics accept insurance. Most places including the hospital expect cash or credit card payment at time of treatment.

Hair Salons and Barbers

In addition to the salons listed below, some of the major hotels have international salons/barbershops. There are, of course, lots of inexpensive local barbershops and ladies salons all over town but the barbers/stylists rarely speak English. Haircuts at a street stall for 1500R, at a local barber shop for about $1. Also see the ‘Spa and Massage’ section (page 42) for boutique spas offering hair care and treatments, body and skin care, aromatherapy, massage, aromatherapy, facials, waxing, steam and more.

Internet

Public internet access is fast, inexpensive and widely available at Internet shops and cafes all over town. Prices average about $1.00/hour. Many hotels and guesthouses have internet available and some now offer in-room WiFi access. Several restaurants and bars in town also offer WiFi internet access, including the FreeBird Bar and Grill, Pickled Parrot, Hagar Catering, FCC, Java Café, K-West and more. See the restaurant section (page 93-121) for more WiFi locations. Look for the icon.

Internet Providers Phnom Penh has several internet providers offering various internet systems (dial up, broadband DSL, ADSL and wireless) and pricing packages for home and office. Internet service is comparatively expensive, costing a minimum of $40/month or so for the most basic access package.

Living in Phnom Penh

Housing Those staying in Phnom Penh short term or on a tight budget may consider arranging a monthly rate with their hotel or guesthouse. Several hotels in the Boeng Keng Kang 1 area (Golden Gate, Golden Bridge, Goldiana, etc) cater to NGO/IO workers on medium-term stay, offering reasonably priced, serviced rooms.

House/apartment rental prices range from $100 - $3000/month but averaging between $200 and $800/month, plus utilities. To find a house or apartment of your own, spread the word, tell your Cambodian friends and acquaintances that you and they will bring you lots of options. As a general rule, they will receive a commission from the landlord if you take the place. Also check out the classified ads in the Cambodia Daily, the bulletin board at the FCC and, if you have the time, just drive around desirable neighborhoods looking for 'For Rent' signs. Realty companies list house/apartment rentals and can be quite helpful in meeting your exact requirements and interacting with the landlord, but the rentals tend to be comparatively more expensive.

Housing in the Boeng Keng Kang 1 area and the riverfront area are quite popular with foreign residents, but are more expensive than other parts of town. When deciding where to live also consider that parts of the city are more prone to rainy season flooding and an unreliable electricity supply. Most rental contracts require a security deposit of at least one month, to be applied against the final month(s) of the contract.

Settling In: Kitchenware, Furniture and Décor

Furniture and decor - Boutique shops such as Le Lezard Bleu, and I Ching Décor and Bazar art de vivre offer high quality and custom made furniture. These and other boutiques offer soft furnishing, bedding, drapery, décor and interior design. See the 'Boutiques and Galleries' section page 34-41. Also for furniture, there are half-dozen furniture stores on the east side of Monivong between Sihanouk and Mao Tse Toung selling quality imported home furniture. Several shops clustered together along Monivong south of Mao Tse Toung near Street 466 specialize in moderately priced, locally made wood furniture. The least expensive furniture option, wicker and light wood furniture, can be found at dozens of little shops that line the curve of Sothearos near the intersection of Norodom. Kitchenware - Boutique shops such as Sap Bay and I Ching Décor offer quality tableware and sets. See the 'Boutiques and Galleries' section for more. Of the local markets, Phsar Thmey, closely followed by Phsar Toul Tom Poung, both have the large selections of table and kitchenware, offering a huge selection of imported Chinese and Vietnamese and local plates, bowls, cups, cutlery, pots, pans, etc.

International Primary and Secondary Schools

High quality international primary and secondary education is available in Phnom Penh though it is not inexpensive and class space is limited at certain levels. With the quickly growing number of expatriate families and general increased standard of living, the demand for quality international education is beginning to exceed supply. Many international schools have long waiting lists. Make sure to get your children on the list as early as possible.

Children: Things to Do Phnom Penh offers a limited but growing selection of activities and things to do for families and children. Here are a few suggestions:

Horse back riding - The Cambodian Equestrian Center at Northbridge Intl School offers fun lead rides and a proper riding school for children. See "Recreation and Activities" page 52 for more.

Supermarket play areas - Some supermarkets in town have separate play areas with toys, rides and games. There is usually a small entrance fee. Check out Pencil Super Center at #15, Street 214, Sydney Shopping Center at #139, Kampuchea Krom and Big A at #266, Monivong.

Friendly Restaurants - Both Elsewhere (#175, Street 51) and Gasolina (#56-58, Street 57) have large outdoor areas and plenty of room for the kids to run. Intercontinental Phnom Penh Hotel (023-424888) offer a Sunday buffet brunch with special selections for the kids and a play area with swings, slides and games right in the restaurant.

Ta Kmau Zoo - See ‘Nearby Destinations’ on page 33.

Parks and Playgrounds - Unfortunately there is not much in the way of parks and outdoor playgrounds for kids in Phnom Penh. Wat Phnom has a large open area where children can run and play, can also see and feed Sambo the elephant. Some international schools open there playgrounds and swimming pools on the weekends for a small fee. ABC Preschool and Daycare (#265, Street 480, Tel: 012-956690) offers playgroup for mothers with babies and children every Friday 3PM-5PM.

Book stores - International Stationary and Peace Book Center (See "Doing Business in Cambodia" page 44) both have pretty good selections of English language children's books, games and puzzles for sale. D's Books at #33, Street 240 offers a very good selection of second hand children's books.

Clothing and Tailors Most of the silk and fashion boutiques listed in the 'Boutiques and Galleries' section (pages 34-41) offer custom made clothing, especially lady's clothing - made to order to your requirements and in unique Asian and Euro-Asian styles.

The local tailors are not quite as accustomed to foreigners as they are in Thailand but prices are quite reasonable and they can duplicate anything. Several local tailors are on Monivong near Kampuchea Krom and on Sihanouk between Monivong and Norodom. Independent Tailor near Street 59 on Sihanouk Blvd. is popular men's tailor. Both the Russian Market (Phsar Toul Thom Pong) and Olympic Market offer good selections of fabrics - silks, linins, cottons rayon and blends. Buy fabric at the market and take it to the tailor of your choice. The Russian Market (Phsar Toul Thom Pong) also has lots of vendors selling very reasonably priced surplus export clothing.

Electronic Goods Electronic goods are not particularly inexpensive in Cambodia, but pretty much everything from digital cameras to HD flat screen TVs are available. Check out the stores in the new Sorya Market or one of the electronics goods opposite the face of Phsar Thmey.

Groceries and baked goods The supermarkets, though small by international standards, offer a fairly good selection of imported food items, from both Western and Asian countries, as well as fresh meats, vegetables, fruits and dairy products. Lucky Market is perhaps the best known and most popular. Super Pencil on Street 214 and Big A on Monivong also offer similar selections. A few small specialty shops such as Golden Garden offer unique imported items not found at the supermarkets. Cambodian bakeries located across town, with several concentrated near the corner of Kampuchea Krom and Street 107. Western-style baked goods can be found at bakeries in the 5-star hotels, The Shop and Comme a la Maison.

Telephone/Fax

Cambodia Country Calling Code : 855
Phnom Penh Area Code : 023

Most hotels and the post office have international phone/fax. Overseas calls run $1.60-$3.00/minute. Most internet shops offer Skype/internet phone service for as little as 400R/minute. See page 48 for more on internet.

How to telephone to/from Cambodia

Cambodian telephone numbers are usually listed beginning with a '0' (for example: 023-000000.) The first three numbers (063, 023, 012, 016, 092, etc.) represent the provincial area code or the mobile phone system.

When dialing domestically, it is necessary to dial the entire number including the '0' at the beginning. (for example: 023-000000) When dialing internationally to Cambodia, use the country code but exclude the '0' (for example: +855-23-000000). When dialing an international call from Cambodia, precede the phone number with '007' or '001' (for example: 007-662-251-0000).

Purchasing a phone number/SIM card

In Cambodia, cell phones are more commonly used than fixed phones. Fixed phone lines have the area code prefix 023 in Phnom Penh (there is a different area code prefix for each province in Cambodia.) Cell phones use SIM cards and the numbers have the prefix 011, 012, 015, 016, 092 and 099. You can purchase a SIM card with telephone number at any of the cell phone companies listed below or one of the many phone shops scattered across town. You will need a valid passport with visa and proof of address in Cambodia (i.e. house rental contract, letter from your company/ organization, or ask a Cambodian friend with a valid local ID to come with you and register the purchase.)
