Medical services in Phnom Penh:
Though the medical facilities are still limited and in many cases not up
to international standards, there has been much improvement in recent
years, offering a greater range and quality of services. There are
several foreign doctors and international clinics in town, most listed
below. Calmette Hospital and the international clinics can handle most
medical problems but serious illness or injury may still require medical
evacuation, probably to Bangkok or Singapore. In addition to general
medical services, the international clinics also offer evacuation and
medical translation services. Though the cost of medical care is fairly
nominal in Cambodia, the cost of medical evacuation is exorbitant.
Medical insurance including evacuation insurance is highly advisable.
In case of medical emergency, proceed to the main hospital (Calmette
Hospital) or one of the major international clinics such as
International SOS. Be aware that the ambulance services are not always
prompt and the emergency telephone numbers sometimes go unanswered. Also
be aware that only a couple of the foreign clinics accept insurance.
Most places including the hospital expect cash or credit card payment at
time of treatment.
