Sihanoukville Hotels and Guesthouses

Except for holiday weekends, there is no shortage of hotel rooms in Sihanoukville. On average, fan rooms run $5-$10 and a/c for $10-$25. There are also plenty of guesthouses ($2-$8), a growing number of upper mid-range places ($30-$60), and the 5-star Sokha Beach Resort. Most of the hotels are concentrated in the downtown area, on Ochheuteal Beach and Weather Station Hill. The following list is not comprehensive and represents the range of accommodations available.

The downtown area is a 5- minute moto ride or a 30- minute walk from the beaches. The advantage to staying downtown is the easy access to restaurants, taverns, transport and markets. Hotels in town tend to be uniform in character and price at $8-$15 for a single room with A/C, cable TV, and hot water. Generally speaking, lower prices mean older, more spartan rooms. There is a concentration of hotels in the center of the downtown along Ekareach St.

The beaches with the most hotel and restaurant facilities are Ochheuteal and ‘Serendipity' beaches. Some of the town’s best hotels and bungalows are on Ochheuteal Street just 50 meters off the ocean. One block off the beach road, on 23 Tola Street, there are the mid-range Golden Sand, Holiday Hotel, Orchidee Guesthouse as well as a couple budget places. ‘Serendipity Beach’, at the north end of Ochheuteal, is offering an increasing number of budget and mid-range beachside bungalows.

Located on the opposite side of town from Ochheuteal Beach, about 1.5km from downtown, Weather Station Hill (a.k.a. Victory Hill) sits above Victory Beach and has long been popular with budget travelers. Several budget guesthouses, bungalows, restaurants and bars dot the Hill, particularly on the beach side. There’s a booming nightlife on the top of the Hill these days, with several bars and clubs staying open into the wee hours.

The Downtown Area sits central on the peninsula, about five minutes from all of the main beaches (by moto taxi or tuk-tuk.) The downtown is fairly compact, harboring several mid-range hotels and budget guesthouses, lots of bars and restaurants, the main market, convenience stores and banks. If you arrive by bus or taxi you will disembark at the bus station at the northern edge of the downtown area in front of the new market (the Sihanoukville Trade Center) on Omui Street. The downtown area is only about a kilometer and a half wide with most of the businesses strung along the main street (Ekareach Street) and within a couple of blocks either side.

Ochheuteal/Serendipity Beaches Area

The Ochheuteal area has a good selection of near-beach accommodations ranging from mid-priced hotels ($25-$80) through small hotels ($10-$30) and budget guesthouses ($3-$12), most located along the three roads paralleling the beach (more densely at the northwest end) and along the road from the Golden Lion Traffic Circle to Serendipity Beach. The mid-section of Ochheuteal is the busiest part of the beach. The sand is lined tightly with beach shack restaurant/bars and the roads behind offer a pretty even mix of mid-range and budget hotels and guesthouses. A few bungalows and rooms are also tucked up amongst the headlands at either end of Ochheuteal including Cloud 9 at Serendipity and Queen Hill Resort overlooking both Ochheuteal and Otres, (the next beach south.)

The Victory Beaches are two long beaches divided by a rocky point and a small hill, so named for the Victory Monument that sits in the boulevard park near the midpoint. The northern section near Victory Monument is called as ‘Victory Beach’ and is the most popular area with travelers. Victory Beach sits at the base of the popular Weather Station Hill (Victory Hill) near the Vietnam-Cambodia Monument (Victory Monument). Above Victory Beach, Weather Station Hill (a.k.a. Otres Beach Area

Otres Beach is the next beach south of Ochheuteal Beach and resembles Ochheuteal in many ways - a three kilometer crescent of white sand facing the southwest. But Otres is far less developed and touristed than Ochheuteal, offering a more leisurely, relaxed atmosphere. Though much of central portion of the beach was recently closed for a development project, long stretches remain open at the near and far ends and retain that same laid back Otres feel. A dozen or so beachshack-style bars and restaurants stretch along a kilometer of sand at the near end and there are a few newly built guesthouses /bungalows across the beachfront road 20 meters from the water. And a few beach bars and accommodations have moved up to the secluded far end of the Otres, along the beach and even up the river.

Independence Beach Area

Independence Beach is more than a kilometer long, but the sandy area is a bit narrow, making the beach best when the tide is lower...if it was open. Due to a development project, most of Independence Beach has been closed to the public. Only small sections of beach at the north and south ends remain open. At the southern end of the beach, near Sasha Guesthouse, a small slice of beach is open, offering a quiet, lightly touristed corner of sand with just a few drink and seafood snack vendors cluster together under the trees. At the northern end, the beach is accessible from Independence Hotel, which sits on the headland overlooking the ocean.

The Islands

Most of the nearby tropical islands are undeveloped and deserted except for the stray fishing camp or small village.
